Pelmeni; The Russian Dumpling
clicking this image will take you to a website contained a recipe for Pelmeni
One of the most common dishes in the Russian cuisine is Pelmeni. The reason being is because it has been embedded in Russian culture for hundreds of years. One of the unique aspects of this food is that it is a very simplistic recipe yet the process to make it is very tedious. Pelmeni is a meat based dumpling mixed with onions and wrapped in somewhat salty dough. The reason for this was because the dough and meat did not go bad unlike bread, in early Russian history Siberian hunters would take large sacs of these when traveling long distances. They would do this because the Pelmeni would freeze and these would prevent them from going bad, and they would cook them by boiling them. This became a traditional Russian dish over the years with many variations and additions to the recipe.
This dish has remained in Russian culture for hundreds of years and has traveled all over the world. I find it to be important to Russian culture because even after all the divides in Russian history dating back to the formation of the USSR to its decay this dish has been seen in all the countries that have formed after the soviet union dissipated. Although the dish has been adopted into other recipes and has many variations this is nothing compared to the original recipe which every Russian mother knows to this day. I know this because I come from a Russian family and my mother has been cooking this dish for my entire life, along with my grandmother who used to make them for me when I would spend the night at her house. I have seen this dish at many of our family parties as well as at my parent’s friends who are also Russian having them for us to eat when we come over to their house for dinner as well. In conclusion, this dish has become a very important Russian dish and it has survived in its original recipe over many generations, this is one of the unique aspects and tastes of Russian culture that will be embodied within Russian families for many years to come.
